How does it work?
Conventional surgical treatment for varicose veins (stripping) used to be the gold standard, but new techniques for the treatment of saphenous and varicose veins have been added to the range of options for 10 years.
These techniques are endovenous thermal procedures based on either laser or radiofrequency technology.Both are minimally invasive and simple, but they require at least 10 local anesthetic injections along the thigh and the leg.
VENASEAL is a new technique recently developed for the treatment of saphenous and varicose veins which doesn’t require as many local anesthetic injections. Like laser and radiofrequency ablation, it is an endovenous procedure that doesn’t require any incision on the skin.
- Only one ultrasound-guided puncture is performed to access the vein
- The main vein will be sealed with a medical glue called cyanoacrylate VENASEAL
- Besides, all the peripheral veins fed by the main venous trunk will collapse and disappear.
Benefits:
Compared to laser or radiofrequency ablation, VENASEAL has many benefits:
- VENASEAL can be used as an in-office procedure, on an out-patient basis. No operating room is required, and there is no downtime nor hospitalization.
- Contrary to laser and radiofrequency techniques, VENASEAL does not require local anesthetic to be injected along the lower limb via multiple needle pricks (tumescent anesthesia) because VENASEAL is not a heat-based technique; therefore, the vein is not heated, but glued.
- There is generally no need for compression stockings nor pain medication afterward.
- Most patients report no significant discomfort after the procedure.
You will be able to return to normal activity immediately after the procedure. You won’t need anybody to accompany you or pick you up after the procedure, and you will be able to go back home on your own shortly after you have been treated. An ultrasound follow-up will be performed between 8 days and 1 month after the treatment.
In the United States, studies comparing VENASEAL to radiofrequency (gold standard for thermal energy based endovenous procedures) have shown the same efficiency for both techniques as regards venous closure.
So far, the results are very promising. Further studies are being conducted to evaluate the long term results.
Before making any decision regarding treatment, a comprehensive ultrasound scanning will be performed in order to determine the most appropriate treatment for your varicose veins, and the best strategy to treat your venous disease.
According to the results of the ultrasound examination, if VENASEAL appears to be a suitable option, we will give you an estimate of the cost of this procedure that is currently not reimbursed by the French social security system.
