Varicose veins are an abnormal and permanent dilation of the veins. They sit - most often - at the lower limbs. They are veins that no longer fulfill their primary function of bringing the oxygen-poor venous blood back to the heart: the direction of circulation is then reversed.

Varicose veins are explained by a loss of elasticity of the wall of the veins and an attack of the valves (the "valves" that prevent the return of the blood).
