A superficial venous thrombosis is a blood clot that develops in a superficial vein, causing the vein to become red, inflamed, hardened and painful.

The throbbing pain caused by the inflammation may last for several days.

Sometimes, the blood clot can spread to the deep venous network and cause a deep vein thrombosis. In that case, the treatment will be longer. Migration of the blood clot to the pulmonary arteries is exceptional (pulmonary embolism).
